Right out of college I moved to London to work through a program called Bunac. I was only there for a few months before I came back home for good because of a family emergency. Just after arriving in London a few days, I met up with some friends and we took off for Mykonos, Greece. We were excited to be traveling to such a beautiful island and to have some downtime before work started.
A whole week in Greece meant beach time, hanging with the locals and eating great food fresh from the ocean and land. I had never really experienced Greek food before traveling and I had a lot of my firsts while there and it included: gyros, Greek salad, moussaka and calamari. Now when I have it in the states, it just doesn’t compare to the real deal in Mykonos.
This past week I noticed some Certified Angus Beef New York Strip steaks on sale at United Supermarkets. Ever since I made these kebabs I knew that I wanted to try out a different version. I started out with a Greek Souvlaki marinade for the beef and then added some vegetables to complete the skewers. Of course, you can substitute and add your own vegetables but these went with my Greek theme for the evening. You can even serve it alongside some warm pita bread for a greek kabob sandwich.
Most people go to the store and don’t really know a lot about the different cuts or types of meat that are offered. Certified Angus Beef Choice Steaks: It’s one of the highest grades of meat from the USDA. It’s tender, juicy and you will find consistent marbling throughout this cut of steak. Also, if you have a question or you’re not sure what to pair it with, don’t be afraid to talk with the butcher in the meat department. They are full of knowledge and love to help people out with selecting the best option for your meal. Now head down to United and select your cut and give this kabob a try, you won’t regret it.
In a large bowl combine the olive oil, minced garlic, oregano and lemon juice. Add the steak and stir. Cover tightly and place in refrigerator to marinade for at least 2 hours.
Heat a grill and bring it to a medium temperature. Starting with one skewer add on a tomato half, steak, red onion, green olive and then repeat. Finish the rest of the skewers and add to the grill.
Cook 2-3 minutes on each side.
