I’ve been creating my own fizzy bath bombs for a few years and today, I want to share my no-fail recipe with you. These bath bombs are simple to make and can be customized with your favorite colors and scents.

The secret to making bath bombs that fizz is simple chemistry. If you remember the classroom science experiment where you make a volcano out of baking soda and vinegar, then you understand the basic idea of bath bombs.
Baking soda is a base, and citric acid is acidic. When you combine these ingredients and put them in water, there’s a fizzing reaction. The key is to mix the ingredients correctly, so they fizz in the bath and not while you make the recipe. When you do it right, you’ll get the maximum fizzy effect.

Avoid These Ingredients
Don’t add honey, sugars, glycerin, or milk powders to your bath bombs. These ingredients attract moisture, which can result in bath bombs that are too soft or less fizzy.
Substitutes for Cornstarch
Cornstarch is what makes your bath bombs harden. If you want to leave it out, you need to substitute an ingredient that will have the same effect. Kaolin clay or tapioca starch are good alternatives.
Do DIY Bath Bombs Expire?
Bath bombs don’t really “go bad” and can be stored for long periods, but they do lose their effectiveness over time. Bath bombs can last for months, but they’re at their freshest for the first three weeks. After that, they can slowly lose their fizziness. (See how to store your bath bombs below.)
Tip: You can maximize the fizzy reaction by using your bath bombs in hot water. The heat amplifies the chemical reaction that makes your bath bombs fizz.

DIY Fizzy Bath Bombs Recipe
These fizzy bath bombs are simple to make and can be customized with your favorite colors and scents.
Materials
- 1 cup baking soda
- ½ cup citric acid
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 1/ 3 cup Epsom salt
- 2 ½ tablespoons almond oil
- ¾ tablespoon water
- 4-5 drops essential oil
- Optional: food coloring
Instructions
- Combine all dry ingredients. Mix thoroughly to break up any lumps.
- Add essential oil drops to the almond oil. These are some of my favorite scented oils to use.
- Slowly add the oil mixture into the dry ingredients. If you pour too fast, it will cause the mix to activate. Stir gently until mixed.
- Add water slowly and stir gently to avoid activating the mixture.
- If you want to add color, slowly mix in a small amount of food coloring, gel food coloring, or natural mica powder until the desired color is reached.
- Press gently into metal molds and connect. I love using these molds for my bath bombs.
- Remove any excess mixture from the center of the mold and then slowly remove the casing.
- Place the bath bomb onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Repeat until the bath bomb mixture is gone.
- Let your bath bombs sit for 24 hours before using it.
