YAY for Grandmothers!
I feel that the best and I mean BEST recipes come from our relatives or friends that have been passed down for several generations. This Milky Way Cake recipe comes from my grandmother’s cookbook. Who wouldn’t love milky way bars or any type of candy in their dessert. Sign me up every-time!
There is nothing better than watching the Olympics and baking! You get to see someone else get a great workout and compete in something that I would never be able to do while I’m sampling chocolate. Thank goodness I don’t have to step into a leotard or swimsuit in front of millions of people. I don’t think my pertruding baby bump would help out the outfit!
The hardest part of this recipe is letting your BAJILLION milky ways sit in your pantry uneaten until you make the cake. I can’t tell you how many times I wanted to steal a bar and just make the recipe call for one less. I did however eat a couple of the chopped pieces before adding them to the mixture. OOPS!!!
ENJOY!
*FOR THE CAKE*
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In microwavable bowl add milky way bars and 1/2 cup margarine and heat in microwave until candy melts then set aside.
In bowl add sugar, 1/2 cup margarine – softened, 1/2 cup flour, eggs and vanilla and beat until creamy.
Then add buttermilk and baking soda and mix.
When milky way mixture is cooled add to bowl along with pecans, 2 cups flour and salt.
Pour into greased and floured tube pan.
Cook for 60 minutes or until done and then let cake cool for at least 45 minutes.
*FOR THE ICING*
In large mixing bowl cream the butter until smooth.
Add 1/2 cup of confectioners sugar at a time to butter.
Add the almond extract, salt and milk to batter and beat for about 2-3 minutes.
Cut the cake in half with a bread knife and spread 1/4 to 1/2 of the icing onto the cake.
Place the cup piece of the cake back on top of the icing and spread the rest of the icing on top of the cake with cake spatula.
Top with chopped milky way bar pieces.
