Follow my guide on how to grow sunflower sprouts in the comfort of your own home. You will see photos along with the products used for this process. 

A few years ago, we discovered sunflower sprouts at our local farmer’s market during the summer. Each year we venture to the same booth every Saturday to pick up our weekly bag of sprouts for our family. On numerous occasions, I have mentioned that I would soon learn to make our own or wait until we have a greenhouse.

FYI You don’t need a greenhouse to make sunflower sprouts.

I was also amazed at how fast the sunflower sprouts grow and that growing your own is the best route to go.

What you will need: (What I use)

• Sunflower Sprouting Seeds
• Durable Growing Trays
• Planting Soil

Below are the steps on how to grow sunflower sprouts indoors plus pictures. Feel free to ask me any questions about the process.

Step 1
Pour 3/4 cup sunflower sprouting seeds into a bowl and fill with water. Make sure that the seeds are well covered with the water. Let it sit in the water for 24 hours.

Step 2
Drain and rinse the seeds. Place them back in the bowl and cover with a damp cloth or paper towel. Let it sit for 12-16 hours. You will now have small sprouts coming from the seeds.

Step 3
Pour soil into the growing trays about 1/2″ deep. Moisten the soil before adding the seeds.

Step 4
Create a layer spreading the seeds out over the top of the soil. Then sprinkle the soil over the seeds, just enough to cover them.

Step 5
Cover with another tray to lock in the moisture. Water once a day until you see yellow sprouts growing. Uncover and let them grow directly in the sunlight.

Step 6
Once they are 2-3 inches in height, cut them with scissors at the dirt level. Rinse the sprouts to remove the dirt and any remaining seeds that might be attached.

Step 7
Store the sprouts in a Ziploc bag or airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.

*TIP – Once you cut the sunflower sprouts, rewater the sprouts and place back in the sunlight. The remaining sunflower sprouts will soon start to grow. You may need to repeat this step several times after trimming. I was surprised at how much can grow each time you cut.
